Bring on Summer!

I love summer! There are so many things I love about summer that I’d run out of time before I could name them all. Just a few are the warmth of the sun, the green grass, the freedom of school being out, the opening of the pool, kids out riding bikes exploring the neighborhood, the ice cream truck, flip flops, shorts, grilling out, relaxing with friends…

Summer… I love to soak it all up and live it out!

One of my greatest memories as a kid was lying down on the concrete with my friends, either during adult swim or after swim practice, and letting the sun completely dry us off. We wouldn’t put down a towel or use a chair and we wouldn’t move until our skin was tight and dry again. As we soaked up the sun, the pavement would soak up the water. If we got up at just the right time, there was the wet outline of where we had laid down. So, sometimes we would intentionally position our bodies so it would leave a crazy shape when we got up.

Summer… I love to soak it all up and live it out!

As I look out the window, the New Life Preschool kids are living up Water Day. There’s the inflatable whale slide, monkey bubble mit (oh the advancements in bubble blowing technology!), water tables, sprinklers and a dunk tank! I’m a little jealous of those who are laying on their towels chatting together and certainly intrigued by the modern chalk art expressions on the sidewalk, but it’s the shrieks of glee that are so contagious that I’m tempted to go out and jump right in with them!

Summer… What a delight to watch others soak it all up and live it out!

Momma always said… “You are what you eat.” and “Garbage in garbage out.” and “You will find what you are looking for - if you are looking for nice people you will meet them. If you are looking for trouble you will find it!” I like how the missionary and church planter of the first century put it, “Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things (Philippians 4:8).”

Summer… What will you be soaking up and living out?

Why not spend a little extra time in the Bible and soak up the goodness of God? I invite you to join me in reading through the book of Ephesians over and over again and trying to memorize this verse and many others like it: “In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding (Ephesians 1:7-9).” I wonder how my life would change if I let the truth of that verse soak in.

What a delight it must be to God as he sees us soak up all the blessings he pours into our lives. What an even greater joy it must be for God to see the impression we leave behind as we live it out.
